This topic is some times a myth to webmasters. They know its important for search engines but not sure exactly what it means or what effect it has on your pages. More important, "What can they do to make it help them." Hopefully in this article I will explain everything you need to know about link popularity and how you can use it to increase your search engine position.

Link popularity is defined as domains/sites that are popular sites. A search engines job is to give the most accurate and relevant search for a query. So naturally it would love to give a higher placement for a site that is popular. What makes a site popular on the Internet? Two things: traffic and how many other sites are feeding surfers to it. Notice I didn’t just say ‘linked back to it’ I'll explain that later.

The common misconception about link popularity is, "The more site I have link to me the better my link popularity." This is not always the case. Search engines are smart now a days. They can determine which sites are generally more popular in traffic and links and give more weight if these extremely popular sites link to you. What is an extremely more popular site? Yahoo.com, Dmoz.org, and Mircosoft.com to name a few. A link back to your site from these sites gains more weight than a link back from joemamatittyshack.com. Also major site in each industry give higher weight than sites linking to you from an unrelated place. Example: More weight is given if your AVS site is linked from persiankitty.com than from beaniebabyoutlet.com.

So knowing that your link popularity will increase if you’re linked from a high traffic and popular site. How can I use this information to increase my positions in the search engines from link popularity?

Submit to Dmoz
Dmoz.org is considered an extremely popular site. A link on dmoz will get addition link backs on AOL, Netscape, and various other search engines will all count toward increasing your link popularity.

Buy a keyword at Goto.com
Pick a wild keyword at Goto that probably won’t get any hits that relates to your site and buy it for the minimum price. Buying the keyword is not meant to get your traffic but to get a link back from goto.com and the many other search engines that take there listings from Goto. Dogpile, Mama.com, Lycos just to name a few. Because you picked a wild keyphrase that nobody will ever search for. You will be more than likely ranked number 1 for that keyword phrase and will get premier listings also in those other engines. Also as a bonus nobody will click it cause it’s a keyphrase that nobody uses. So in effect this method is free.

(Editor's Note: I think I read somewhere that starting Sept. 1st (or around then), minimum bid will be raised to 0.05 and you will be required to spend a certain amount of money each month ($25/month I believe)... so you might want to check into that before utilizing this method)

Posting to message boards
Posting your domain as a tag line to your posts is one of the easiest ways to gain link popularity while promoting your site at the same time. Many message boards domains are highly popular domains so it can be a good boost in your link popularity.

Start a link page off your root domain. Making a links page is the oldest way of increasing link popularity. Exchanging links with other webmasters. This method can be tedious and take a long time. Of course every little bit helps.

Submitting to Free for All Pages
This method you might want to try, but I think search engines are starting to recognize which sites are FFA pages and are penalizing against them. Might be helpful to submit to smaller ones only.

If you want to check your link popularity in Search engines:

Altaista & Infoseek
Type in: "link:persiankitty.com"
Use the "URL command to remove pages that are linked together within your own site

Inktomi & Hotbot/Msn
Type in the following "linkdomain:persiankitty.com"
Use the -domain command to eliminate pages link together from within your site

Excite
With excite you can only get a general estimate by entering the URL without the http:// prefix
The page count will give you a rough idea

Other good place to go to check your link popularity is:
http://linkpopularity.com

What is the future of link popularity? Well Search engines are already devising algorithms to use click popularity vice link popularity.

Click popularity determines how many people are clicking on links to your sites from other domains, how many of them a actually browsing your site, and how many surfers are repeat surfers returning to your site. This will definitely change the way people gain link popularity so be on the look out for it.
