Today, over six years since the Adult Online Industry was first established, there are an abundant amount of sponsors to choose from. They all seem similar, but advertise that they are different. For a webmaster, it is important to realize that every sponsor is different and that by correctly selecting the best sponsors one can increase his or her income dramatically.

With so many out there, how does one even begin to choose an affiliate program? This question affects both new and veteran webmasters alike. The following serves as a guide to help webmasters answer this question.

To start, a webmaster needs to determine his or her own needs and realize that each sponsor performs differently for every webmaster. Looking at the type of traffic that is targeted on the site is a good way to do this. The best-fit niches and the quality of the surfer should be established. For the highest quality traffic (surfers who are not only like to sign up, but also convert) the best route would be either a partnership or per active member program. For traffic where most surfers who sign up will not renew, a per-sign-up program is the most profitable solution. Lastly, for low converting traffic a per-click program would fit best. With all this in mind, the webmaster then compares what niches he or she needs to advertise and what pay programs would fit best with what the different affiliate programs offer.

To narrow the field a bit more, the webmaster needs to do some research on a couple of topics. One should investigate the sponsor’s reputation by asking around on message boards and learning about the program as much as possible. Key issues to look at are payouts and trust worthiness. Checking out the quality of the webmaster support is also a very good idea. One way to do this is to just e-mail the sponsor with some questions, maybe about the best converting sites or some tips for webmasters. The sponsor should get back to you within two days with the information. This webmaster support is a fundamental part of the relationship between webmaster and sponsor.

After doing all this, the webmaster should have at least five qualifying sponsors. So what’s next? That’s the hard part, trial and error. Now it is time to test out each of the sponsors in equal situations to fairly compare. This can be time consuming because at least a week’s trial for each program is required. By using banner rotation software, the webmaster can test all the sponsors fairly at the same time. Otherwise he or she must stick to the manual method.

A short cut for checking out the performance of a program is to look at the exit consoles that some of the top programs use. Many companies often have full time employees that analyze the performance of different sponsor programs and use only the best programs on the exit pop-ups. By looking at who is using what one can get a better idea of what programs to look at. However, even with using this shortcut, a test period still is needed.

After the test period is over, the webmaster should have an idea of what sponsors work best by comparing not only conversion ratios but the overall amount of money earned, maybe one program converted less then another, but paid $10 more. It is quite possible that in this case it would be better to go with the lower converting program which offers a higher payout or vice versa. Another important result of testing to look at is the fact that one sponsor may not be best for all the webmaster’s needs. Using a combination of multiple sponsors may maximize profits.

By following this guide a webmaster should be able to qualify his or her best sponsors. However, it is important to not only find good sponsors when first starting out, but also to occasionally test out other sponsors and be aware of different options. Keeping up to date with new sites or marketing tools offered by various sponsors is a great way to accomplish this. Being a webmaster is hard work, but by working both hard and smart one can achieve a great amount of satisfaction as well as money.
